Blowfish on Bay Sushi Restaurant - Toronto
Blowfish on Bay is a Japanese restaurant located at the corner of Bay and Temperance Streets in downtown Toronto. The second venture from the owners of Blowfish, this restaurant serves Japanese fusion cuisine in a chic and vibrant atmosphere.

Blowfish on Bay follows a bronze and dark wood design to create a chic yet stately space. A bronze-walled pink-lit ramp leads to the main dining space appointed with a chandelier crafted from crystal-filled Pyrex tubes, custom-made walnut tables and plush banquettes. A backlit translucent screen divides the bar area from the dining room. The sushi station is towards the far end of the bar.

Blowfish on Bay is known as a great restaurant for sushi in Toronto. We dined here on a Monday night and the place was crowded. The menu offered a nice selection of sushi along with soups, salads, sides and hot and cold plates. Blowfish Makimono and the Giant Ebi Shooter are the signature dishes at this restaurant. Some of the items under hot and cold plates that caught our eye were the Tuna Taco, One-Bite Wagyu Gyoza and Crispy Crab, shrimp and scallop spring roll.

We started our dinner with a complimentary endamame. Next up was a variety of sashimi consisting of tuna, salmon and yellowtail. Priced per pair, these were extremely fresh and the portions were huge. Very impressive, I must say!

Our next course was the Unagi Sushi. While it was good, I cannot say it was phenomenal. For our maki rolls we had spicy salmon, soft shell tartar and rainbow flame. The spicy salmon was made of salmon, negi, spicy Kewpie (Japanese mayonnaise) and tempura bits. The soft shell Tartar was made of soft shell crab, avocado, lettuce, chive, yuzu tobiko, sesame and tartar sauce. The rainbow flame was made of shrimp tempura, unagi, salmon, tuna, tobiko, lettuce, cucumber and avocado and was served with togarashi miso curry kewpie. All in all, the rolls were tasty, fresh and creatively presented.

The wine and cocktail list was fairly extensive with a good selection of both medium priced and higher end wines. The sake list included premium imported sakes and a range of sake cocktails.

Service was very good and attentive at Blowfish on Bay. The atmosphere was very nice and it was quiet enough to carry on a conversation. However, it wasn't as chic and trendy as the original Blowfish restaurant, but was much better for conversing. This restaurant seemed to cater more to the business community with its business lunches and after-work cocktails. However, both restaurants had a distinct vibe of their own.

Overall, we had a great and enjoyable dinner at Blowfish on Bay. This restaurant is definitely one of the hot and happening places for sushi in Toronto. Our rating for Blowfish on Bay is a resounding Bombastic.
