Campagnolo Italian Restaurant - Toronto: Campagnolo is an Italian restaurant located at Dundas and Euclid in the Little Italy neighborhood of Toronto. The first solo venture of Chef Craig Harding, this popular restaurant is open Wednesday through Sunday. Reservations are highly recommended since they have only two seatings a day.

Campagnolo is a rustic style restaurant with terra cotta floors, pine ceilings, lacquered wood tables and an open prep area. An antique couch, caramel coloured plush curtains, brass candelabra and blue and white colored china water jugs add to the quaint atmosphere.

When we called to make a reservation at this Italian restaurant in Toronto, the first seating was full. The earliest we could be seated was at 9:30 which was too late for us that night. However, the restaurant had seating at the bar that was first come first served and we headed over in the hope that we could get a seat there. When we reached Campagnolo at around 8 pm there were three empty tables, but we couldn’t have one since they were already reserved. Finally, we took a seat at the bar. The bartender was our waiter and in the beginning we got the impression that he wasn’t in the mood for diners since his attitude was not welcoming. However, as the evening wore on he became more pleasant.

The small menu at this Italian restaurant in Toronto changes daily. Some of the favorites that the menu doesn’t let go off are the fresh Burrata cheese with roasted grapes and toasted bread, wild Portuguese squid with Sepia Arancini and Arugula sauce and the crispy house-made baguette with a side of freshly baked Gougères. The wine list had about 50 wines in all with whites, reds and sparklers.

We decided to split the house-made Spaghetti All’Amatriciana ($18.00) as our appetizer. The pasta was out of this world and the accompanying tomato sauce had tiny chunks of cured pork in it. Absolutely delish! For the main course, I ordered the Organic Culotte Steak with Cookstown beets, ramps, new potatoes and salsa verde ($28.00) while my partner opted for the Norwegian Ocean Trout with sautéed rapini, smoked cauliflower puree and espelette pepper ($27.00). The food was beautifully executed and full of flavor. For dessert, we ordered the Budino with salted caramel, pudding and chocolate meringue. A huge hit for us! Service at Campagnolo was adequate.

Dinner would have been much more enjoyable had we had a table, but for some reason they kept a number of tables empty during the hour and forty-five minutes that we were there. Maybe people were coming in at 10 or 10:30, but being at the bar took away from the whole experience.

Overall, I felt as if something was missing at this restaurant though the food was amazing. I believe seeing empty tables that we could have easily sat at and the just about adequate service added to our woes. Our rating for Campagnolo is Almost Bombastic.

What I liked: The food

What I didn’t like: The service was just adequate and there were empty tables we could have sat at

Rating: Almost Bombastic
