Amazing Food and Atmosphere = Bombastic!

After our dishes were cleared, came what I thought was going to be the end of our evening. Our server asked if we wanted to see the menu for the fourth (cheese) and fifth (dessert) courses and we said, yes, we would “take a look”; thinking there was no way we would indulge any further!

However, being a bit of a glutton for cheese, I decided a nice cheese plate and port at the end of such a lovely evening would be appropriate. I ordered a mixed selection of cheeses (Chamble, hard aged goat cheese; Tiger Blue, a creamy and intense blue cheese; and Sainte Maure, goat cheese). Keeping with everything else that evening, the presentation of the cheese was just brilliant. In addition to the three cheeses, the plate was decked with bread, crackers, homemade strawberry jam, candied walnuts and pomegranate arils.

Paired with the cool Port, the cheese plate was in fact a perfect way to end a perfect evening. But of course, we could not stop even then! Since we had come this far, we decided that we should end the dinner with a fifth and final course.

We ordered the White Chocolate Pumpkin Mousse with brandied raisins and filo hay to share, to be followed by coffee and Armagnac. If there was one dish that failed to rock us to the core, this was the one. Tasty, but I think we had just been too spoiled with every other dish. Regardless of this minor hitch, the evening had been a huge success.

Service throughout dinner lacked a bit. We were left sitting without water or wine in our glasses more than once. And when we decided to order the cheese plate, our server was nowhere to be found and we had to flag down another server to find him for us. Small service issues like this at a restaurant of this caliber tend to put a damper on the overall experience.

But overall, George Restaurant scores a solid Bombastic Rating. It is indeed one of the best restaurants in Toronto.

What I liked: The décor and the food

What I didn’t like: Service that fell a little short of the rest of the evening

Rating: Bombastic
