Tucked inside a small street called Gilead Pl, Gilead Café has a simple décor. This warm and inviting café seats about 40 diners. Jars of local preserves lining the walls add a splash of color to the otherwise industrial looking café. Parking is available behind the building in front of the signs that say Jamie Kennedy Kitchen.
We decided to check out Gilead Café based on the highly positive review in the Toronto Now magazine. In fact, the magazine had rated this cafe as one of the best places for brunch in Toronto. It took us some time to find the place as it was located on a side street. It would be hard to find this café if you don't know exactly where you are going or if you don't have GPS. We visited Gilead Café on a Saturday only to be told that the brunch is available only on Sundays.
The menu was written on a chalkboard. You have to order at the counter and then find yourself a table. Upon inquiring at the counter, we found that they don't even serve eggs during the week. Apparently, eggs are served only for the Sunday brunch. Even orange juice was not available.
After checking the menu, we decided to order the ham and cheese croissant. After a particularly long wait, our ham and cheese croissant was served. It was dry and horrible, to say the least. Had I not paid 6 dollars for it I would have left it as it was. Moreover, there was not much on the menu that sounded any better either.
I cannot understand how Gilead Café can be rated so highly, unless their Sunday brunch is a whole lot better than their normal breakfast offerings. For $30.00 ($6 each for ham and cheese croissant, $6 each for water, plus a few bucks for coffee), you should get a whole lot more than what we got at this cafe. This is definitely not a place I will recommend for breakfast in Toronto. Our rating for Gilead Café is Almost Not Bombastic.
