Le St. James hotel is housed in a beautiful old building from 1870 which has been restored to the luxury boutique hotel it is today. With 60 guest-rooms and suites that are each unique with eye-catching distinct décor, amazing amenities and completely spacious rooms, the hotel is meant for those looking for absolute self indulgence.

Located in the heart of Old Montreal, Le St. James hotel offers its guests a truly classy respite in an elegant and charming manner. Known for its professional service, amenities and hospitality, we were curious about what our stay at this classically restored former Merchants’ Bank building located near the main shopping center amidst restaurants and financial offices would bring to us.

First Impression/Lobby: To walk into Le St. James hotel was akin to walking into the charm and luxury of a lost era. Shiny polished wooden floors and wall beams, beautiful curios, drapes, upholstery, busts, and floral arrangements that took your breath away, magnificent entry doors, gleaming counter-tops; the warmth and richness of the lobby spelt luxury and class in every step of the way.

Reception: The reception area was beautifully done and had a quiet elegance that was magnified by the richness of the décor, upholstery and wood. Our check-in was efficient and fast and we were soon on our way to our magnificent suite.

The Suite: The Nessbit-Thompson suite at Le St. James hotel which was to be our home for a few days, was gorgeous and extremely welcoming. All luxurious amenities were at our disposal. The bedroom gleamed with its rich wooden furnishing, stylish headboard of the king size bed, beautiful side tables with plush comfortable sofa chairs to sink into, elegant table-lamps, side tables and chairs to sit in and more. The wall was adorned with choice pieces of art and the drapes in soft colors that warmed the bedroom. The rugs were heavy and had delicate prints on them in rich threads and colors. The bed was fitted with soft and made-to-sink-into goose-down comforter and cotton pique sheets that was a complete delight for me to curl into at night. The high ceilings and hardwood floors added to the elegance of the room. The bedroom also had a large plasma TV with a DVD player. No points of comfort in decor were missing from the bedroom in our suite at Le St. James hotel.

There was a dazzling separate living room with a fireplace and mantle reminiscent of old Victorian houses. With plum sofas, plush chairs and beautiful dust-rose drapes, the room was made for lounging in. It also offered a carved writing table that I found very handy. The living room also came with a LCD TV and DVD player. Attached was a very spacious walk-in-closet with ample luggage storage space.

The master bathroom at our suite in Le St. James hotel was marbled and had a glass rain and multi-jet shower with a soaking tub. The bathroom was fitted with all amenities you could ask for. Looking for a nice relaxing bath in a luxurious setting? This was the place for it.

The minor missing points at our suite were that the robes and slippers were missing. The mini-bar wasn’t stocked fully and our air conditioner wasn’t working properly leaving the bedroom cold and the living room hot. We got the feeling that this suite was allotted to us at the last minute and not prepared properly.

Room Service: The room service at Le St. James hotel was excellent. The food was served on time and the staff was courteous, warm and friendly.

Housekeeping: The housekeeping at Le St. James hotel was faultless. Our suite was always kept beautifully and well spruced.

Concierge: There was 24 hours concierge service that was professional and exceedingly helpful. All our queries and whims were seen to professionally.

Restaurant: XO Le Restaurant at Le St. James hotel was rated the best restaurant in Montreal by The Gazette in 2009. Chef Michael Mercuri was celebrated for his fine cuisine and the restaurant offered breakfast, weekend brunch, lunch and dinner in a beautifully decorated ambience. The restaurant also offered cocktails and light-eats besides an extensive collection of wines. Unfortunately our time in Montreal ran out before we had the chance to try it.

Pool/Spa/Activities:Le Spa at Le St. James hotel offered great treatment, massages, a steam room and more. The hotel also had a great gym for those looking at a good workout.

The Library: The library at Le St. James hotel deserves a special mention. With a beautiful fireplace, gorgeous heavy wood furniture, intricate chandeliers, fine upholstery and large wooden bookcases holding hundreds of hard bound books, the library was a place you wanted to sit in and read a good book and watch the embers dance in the fire-place. It made one feel romantic and lost in the charms of what it had to offer.

Check-Out: The check-out was quick and efficient and completely faultless.

Overall Impression: Our stay at the Le St. James hotel was absolutely a delight. From the service to the amenities to the food and much more, Le St. James hotel catered to all our needs with ultimate luxury. A place we were happy to rate Bombastic.
