The Moghul Room Indian Restaurant at Mena House Oberoi Hotel - Cairo, Egypt: There is a lot of hype surrounding The Moghul Room Indian Restaurant at Mena House Oberoi Hotel in Cairo. One guidebook calls it “the best Indian restaurant in the Middle East,” while Tatler describes their food as “Gorgeous.” We were told that we just had to go there to see and taste for ourselves. The Mena House Oberoi Hotel is located across from the pyramids so the Moghul Indian restaurant is a convenient choice if you happen to be on a tour. With high expectations, we booked a table on a Saturday night.

When we got there, the place was packed with mostly tourists. The décor was faithful to the hotel’s elegance. The interior was a mix between Egyptian and Indian culture, ornate and romantic with white marble floors, big brown heavy tables with intricate geometric etchings, and matching upholstered chairs. The wait staff was dressed in traditional white Indian clothing while the manager was wearing a black tuxedo suit. Many people were dressed in smart casual and suits. I felt a bit underdressed in jeans and a dress shirt.

The menu consisted of the usual Indian fare including tandoori, tikka masala, dal, and fresh-baked Indian breads. We ordered Chicken Vindalo, which came on a hot metal plate, and Butter Chicken. Both dishes had a very average presentation and the taste was average as well. The Chicken Vindalo was just chicken and sauce and had no potatoes like most Indian restaurants I’ve tried, and the Butter Chicken was bland and without flavor. The rice that came with the dish looked and tasted old. It was a far cry from the raving reviews we’ve been reading and hearing about. Service was decent but nothing special.

Can I recommend Moghul Indian restaurant? I think I would only go back there if I happened to be in the area, or for a late lunch prior to going to the light and sound show at the pyramids, but I wouldn’t go out of my way to eat there again.

If you do decide to eat here, be sure to get a table AWAY from the kitchen door. We had the misfortune of being seated close to it and the endless stream of comings and goings detracted from an already just average experience. Our rating of The Moghul Room at Mena House Oberoi Hotel is Between Bombastic and Not.
