The Best Hotel in Munich

The Charles Hotel – Munich, Germany: The Charles Hotel is part of the Rocco Forte hotel chains, one of my favorite luxury hotel chains. It opened in October 2007 and even though we were there after a year from its opening, it still looked like a brand new property. Conveniently located minutes away from the heart of Munich, Charles Hotel is a walking distance to all the hot spots, restaurants and main sites to see in Munich.

The Charles Hotel was our last stop in our “Round the World” trip. After six weeks of hotel hopping and jetting from city to city and country to country, and after countless luxury hotels and resorts, The Charles was going to have to fill very big shoes and would really need to be something spectacular to impress us. I am quite happy to say, it did not let us down. The Charles Hotelwas simply unforgettable, surpassing all our expectations.

First Impression/Lobby: The spacious lobby of The Charles is all luxury and class with a strong warmth and welcoming spirit. The design is minimalist with a white and wood motif, almost like an art gallery setting. Original paintings by the 19th century Munich artist Franz von Lenbach are hung on the walls and contemporary sculptures and designer furniture are well-placed in key settings.

Reception: The service at the reception was warm and welcoming. We were immediately escorted to our room (seconds after we approached the front desk) where we completed the registration. The staff was utterly professional and well-trained, and the process was as efficient as can be expected from the Germans.

The Suite: Our suite was located at the corner of the third floor. It was bright, spacious and cheery, a great place to call home for our next few days in Munich. The décor was on the masculine side, simple yet elegant with its dark wood floorings, subtle accents, and modern drink cabinets. Comfortable sofas, coffee tables, a king-sized bed, and crisp white linens provided subtle yet satisfying luxuries. Floor to ceiling windows opened to a wrought iron balcony, adding a romantic touch and providing a spectacular view of the gardens.

The bathroom was a mix of marble and Bavarian limestone. It included a soaking tub, separate shower, heated floors and large mirrors.

Room Service: Service, selection, presentation, timing, quality and taste—they excelled in every area. True 5-star Luxury!

Housekeeping: As with room service, housekeeping was flawless. For the ultimate in first class, five-star luxury and pampering, try their unpacking and packing service. Whether you have unpacked and packed untold times like we had the past few weeks, or whether it is your first time, not having that chore is an amazing feeling.

Concierge: The concierge staff was the perfect illustration of professionalism; their knowledge of the city was extensive and impressive, although not perfect. They gave us some great dinner recommendations (Byblos was my favorite) but I found their bar suggestion a bit lacking. They suggested Bayerischer Hof which was quite commercial for our taste. When we asked about The Barroom they were not very familiar with it and thought it wasn’t worth a visit. In my opinion, The Barroom is a must; bars like Bayerischer Hof, on the other hand, can be found in any big city.

Restaurant: The hotel’s signature restaurant is Davvero, which serves Italian-inspired cuisine. It overlooks the botanical gardens and has a terrace that is opened during the summer. It also has a bar, which is simply called, The Bar, which pours some of the country’s much-loved beers.

Pool/Spa/Activities: The Charles Spa and Health Club is one of the hotel’s main features, combining Asian and Greek architecture and providing the latest services and treatments. It has a Zen-inspired pool complete with surrounding Buddhas, a fitness center, a sauna, and a steam room.

Overall Impression Easily put, The Charles Hotel in Munich is a gorgeous, upscale, five-star hotel. At all levels, the staff and the property met or in most cases, surpassed our expectations. They easily receive a rating of Fantastic Bombastic. If you are headed to Munich and want a true, five-star, luxury hotel, then look no further than The Charles Hotel Munich.
