True 5-Star Luxury - Perfection in Amalfi Coast

Palazzo Sasso - Ravello, Italy: Ravello is a popular destination for humanists, it being a place riddled with historic landmarks and scenic locations that are certified tourist gushers. Situated about the Amalfi Coast, Ravello boasts of wonderful sightseeing experiences that only a small town overlooking a vast ocean of blue can offer.

During our trip, we stayed at two 5-star luxury hotels, namely the Palazzo Sasso and its next-door neighbor the Hotal Caruso. Although both are winners of prestigious awards such as the Condé Naste Traveler and the Wagner Award for Best Hotel, respectively, as well as offering similar room pricing, the Palazzo Sasso and Hotel Caruso offered altogether different experiences. With both hotels overlooking a breathtaking view of the Amalfi, it might be difficult to make a decision but after a stay at both, a decision like would be simple!

First Impression/Lobby: The Palazzo Sasso's lobby reminded me what it was like to really see, feel and hear what you were spending for: gorgeous interior design, elegant charm, soothing ambient lighting and warm smiles and greetings from the staff. If the lobby of Hotal Caruso was breathtaking, the Palazzo Sasso's lobby was nothing short of heart stopping, though smaller in comparison.

Reception: I noted the sincere warmth of the staff behind the reception counter as they greeted us upon our arrival. With a place as stately and even snooty looking as this one, you'd expect everyone to be walking with their heads high breathing hopeless sighs as fresh-off-the-boat tourists make their way around the hotel. Since we arrived earlier than expected, the radiant receptionist advised us to visit the hotel's pool while preparations were made for our stay.

The Suite: As is customary, we booked the hotel's suite, and what was given to us was the Infinito Suite, which is the best room in the entire hotel (mainly because there's only one of its kind!) It is a two level room located on the top floor of the palace (hotel), and it gives an entire new world of meaning to the word suite!

The Infinito Suite sports a living room at the ground floor with a separate bedroom, dining area, a kingly bathroom off the bedroom, and a much smaller guest bathroom off the living room. The living room has an extravagant marble staircase that leads to the second floor, which is primarily an area for relaxation. It has a small area for sitting and a huge rooftop outdoor terrace that allows for a full 360-degree view of the Amalfi Coast while unwinding inside the Jacuzzi.

The exquisitely designed living roam boasts a large LCD TV set equipped with Bose Hi-Fi speakers, extremely comfortable couches and a small table. Should you wish to get any work done, the living room offers a small desk as well.

One of the best things about a suite in a 5-star luxury hotel is its large, well-equipped bathroom, and the Palazzo Sasso's oversized bathroom does not disappoint! Dual basin sinks, a high end Jacuzzi, a large stand-alone shower, and even complimentary Bulgari products all combine to serve you the best bathroom could ever come across perhaps in this lifetime.

Though everything about the Infinito Suite is big, its bedroom simply isn't as large as one would expect, although its interior adds much to its aesthetic value

Room Service: A five-star luxury hotel should provide top rated room service, and this is another aspect wherein the Palazzo Sasso shines. As we woke up the next day, we phoned in room service for a sumptuous continental breakfast by the terrace. Upon the staff's arrival, they set out to properly execute the perfect breakfast meal setting like only a true five star hotel ever could. That was one of the most delicious and gorgeous meals I have ever had.

Housekeeping: Effective housekeeping is good, methodical and transparent. I didn't catch a glimpse of the cleaning staff throughout my entire stay, and everything about the room was in order once we left it and before we arrived for bed.

Restaurant: Though we didn't eat at their highly decorated Rossellinis (which is a two-star Michelin restaurant), we opted instead to enjoy the view of the Amalfi while dining under the stars on our terrace with the hotel's eight course Gastronomic Menu, complete with paired wines.

A server at any event where proper wines are presented should know the ins and outs of said wines. The hotel provided us with a knowledgeable individual whose amazing service and wine insight simply astounded us!

Pool/Spa/Activities: The Palazzo Sasso's pool is slightly more diminutive than the one at the Caruso, but it was still gorgeous nonetheless. The staff was rather friendly, though not as warm as the staff over at the Caruso, but their attentiveness towards us is praiseworthy.

Overall Impression:Fantastic Bombastic. This classy, stylish and totally luxurious hotel provided the best of both worlds when it comes to small luxury hotels: it was small enough for us to be cozy and comfortable in it, allowing us to get to know practically the entire staff, and large enough to be given all the privacy and other intimate privileges that we wanted. The Infinito Suite is definitely without peer, thus earning the hotel a Fantastic Bombastic rating!
