A16 Italian Restaurant – Tokyo, Japan A16 is a popular Italian restaurant in the Marunouchi district in Tokyo, Japan. The parent shop in San Francisco operates this Tokyo outpost in partnership with Japanese restaurant corporation Giraud. A16 Tokyo specializes in southern Italian cuisine and is an integral part of Tokyo’s restaurant scene.

A16 Tokyo is located on the ground floor of the Mitsubishi Marunouchi Park office building, just blocks away from the Imperial Palace. Set amidst a beautiful English garden, this restaurant focuses on the freshness of California cuisine. This Italian restaurant in Tokyo has a modern décor and also features an open kitchen. Outdoor seating is available in the Brick Square garden area.

Pizzas, salads, tuna conserva with roasted peppers, chillies and anchovy and the squid ink tonarelli with octopus, ceci beans, chillies and garlic are some of the popular items on the menu. The starters at A16 Tokyo are quite impressive and consist of marinated olives, scallop crudo with zucchini, tomato and basil and tripe with onions, tomato, white wine and breadcrumbs. The wine list includes well known labels from Sicily in Italy and California's Central Coast and Sonoma Valley.

A16 was crowded at the time of our visit. My partner and I felt as if we were in a casual Italian restaurant in America the moment we stepped in. I am not sure whether this is what the restaurant was aiming at, but we sure felt so. We were offered the menu as soon as we were seated. While I opted for the Margherita pizza, my partner decided to go for the penne pasta. Both the dishes were average at best, unlike the outstanding ones served in their original San Francisco restaurant. However, I have to admit that they were acceptable for an Italian restaurant in Tokyo.

The service at A16 Tokyo was decent and fair. All in all, our visit to A16 was a decent experience, but not one that I would rush out to try again. However, I would definitely visit this Italian restaurant in Tokyo for a casual lunch if I was in the mood for some Italian cuisine while in Tokyo.

Overall, my rating for A16 Tokyo is between bombastic and not.

What I liked: The casual ambience

What I didn’t like: Average food

Rating: Between Bombastic and Not
