Il Tetto Restaurant - Salmiya, Kuwait

Beautiful View, So-So Dining

Il Tetto Italian Restaurant – Salmiya, Kuwait: Kuwait has a handful of casual Italian restaurants worth taking note of, most of them adopting a traditional Italian family restaurant sensibility when it comes to the food (the usual pizza-pasta fare) and décor. The Il Tetto is an intentional break from the usual. A fairly new restaurant (opened the end of 2008) located on the top floor of Marina Waves, the Il Tetto Italian Restaurant is a modern take on Italian dining, looking more like a chic café lounge than a traditional Italian restaurant.

Il Tetto, “the roof” in Italian, is worth visiting for its location alone. Outside, big and cozy all-white chairs and tables are strategically placed for an impressive view of the Gulf and the city. Inside, while small, the interior has a cool ambiance mixing low temperature colors such as turquoise and white with a dash of warm and opulent details such as light burgundy velvet.

Their menu ranges from a few soups and a large selection of salads, about fifteen different pastas and just as many pizzas, as well as a good variety of main appetizers including grilled shrimps, seafood, salmon, rack of lamb and roasted rib-eye.

We tried the Penne al l’arrbiata (penne pasta in a spicy tomato sauce with fresh garlic and parsley), Hawaiian Pizza (smoked turkey – not ham, since it is a Muslim country and pork is forbidden), and an order of Garlic Bread and the soup of the day, a creamy tomato soup.

The best part of our meal was the soup and garlic bread, and everything went downhill from there. The pasta and pizza were ordinary —any Italian fast food chain could do better. Their service was attentive, about all that you can expect from a casual restaurant such as this.

The Il Tetto Restaurant is mediocre at best and the only reason to come here is for the amazing view and atmosphere outside. If the weather is nice, I recommend reserving a table outside. If you are you going to eat indoors, however, then you might as well go to La Marina Café at The Avenues, my favorite Italian restaurant in Kuwait. I rate Il Tetto, the casual Italian Restaurant Somewhere Between Bombastic and Not.
