A small restaurant, Shabestan had a fairly traditional Persian décor. Purple curtains acted as table separators, which did offer privacy, but did nothing to town down the noise.

We were at this Iranian restaurant in Kuwait for lunch. The background music and the sound of people talking made this restaurant quite loud. We got there at around 1:30 on a Friday afternoon and it was just about half full. But by 2:30, the restaurant was packed and the volume level grew to an almost unbearable level. The menu offered a decent selection of Iranian appetizers, salads, seafood, rice specialties and grilled chicken, lamb & beef kababs.

We started off with bread, hummus and some salad greens with cheese, tomato, cucumber and nuts. The presentation was not very impressive. For the main course, I ordered the Baghalah Polo-Ba-Mahicheh, leg of lamb cooked in its own juice and seasoned with spices and broad beans with rice. My dining partner had the Kabab-E-Mahi, grilled hammour.

It took a long time for our food to be served. After almost 30 minutes I asked where our food was and the waiter said it was because I had ordered the lamb which takes a long time to prepare. Ideally, the waiter should have informed me about this aspect of the dish while I was placing the order. Sitting for 30 minutes for our main course was just too long to wait.

Anyhow, our dishes were served at last. The hammour was good, as was my lamb (other than being oily). In fact, the lamb was super tender, flavorful and the portion was decent sized too. I could have easily eaten more though. The price for the two dishes, plus water and a soda was almost 20KD ($70+ USD), making it an expensive place for lunch.

Compared to the Garden Iranian restaurant at Spoons , the lamb at Shabestan is better. But the atmosphere, presentation, service and overall experience was better at the Garden. Our rating for this Iranian restaurant in Kuwait is Almost Bombastic.

What I liked: The lamb dish

What I didn’t like: The atmosphere and service

Rating: Almost Bombastic
