Ubon is considered by many locals as one of the best Thai restaurants in Kuwait, so naturally we had to check it out. Located in Salhiya, the first thing that struck us was the modern and trendy vibe it exuded. With walls covered in dark wood, contrasted by white tables and dark chairs, the restaurant gave off an elegant yet relaxed feel. It’s a medium sized restaurant which could seat around 25-30 persons more or less, though we were there during off-peak hours and there were just a few other diners. It’s great to see Kuwait have a nice Thai restaurant of its own.

What about the food? Well, for starters I had the Tom Yum Goong. A well-known Thai dish, it’s a hot and sour prawn soup mixed with various vegetables and mushrooms. I was surprised with it being chock-full of shrimp (more than any I’ve seen in any Thai restaurant, anywhere). It was a very tasty dish of hot and spicy goodness!

My friend had the Tom Yum Talay, which is a hot and sour seafood soup mixed with vegetables and mushrooms. It was also filled with enough seafood to shame other Thai restaurants and was very tasty as well.

Both dishes were very traditional Thai tasting and were wonderful starts to our dinner.

For the main dish, I had the Chicken Green Curry, which was a blend of green chili, herbs, spices and sweet basil, mixed with vegetables in a coconut cream. While my friend had the Shrimps Yellow Curry, a spicy yellow curry dish mixed with potatoes, white onions, vegetables, and peanuts. Both were excellent! Personally, I feel there is nothing better than real traditional Thai curry made right, and Ubon did just that. Wonderfully perfect.

Come dessert time, my friend and I shared the mango sticky rice. Unfortunately, this did not live up to the standards I had come to just appreciate. It’s a small negative really, but the mango was not ripe enough. The sticky rice though was almost as good as what you’d get in Thailand, so that kind of evened things out.

Service overall was very good, and as mentioned earlier, we were there during off-hours when only four other people were dining. However, even if the service were to wane a bit, which I’m not saying it would, I would definitely go back to Ubon – easily the best Thai restaurant in Kuwait in my opinion. Our rating? A well-deserved Bombastic!

What I liked: The ambience, the food, the service

What I didn’t like: The mango could be a little riper

Rating: Bombastic
