Banyan Tree Mayakob: Situated along Mexico's famous Riviera Maya coast, the Banyan Tree Mayakoba offers guests easy access to a pristine coastline, as well as luxurious and comfortable accommodations. The hotel’s enchanting villas are complimented by the staff’s warmth and hospitality.
First Impression/Lobby: We were surprised to discover that the hotel was much larger than its initial appearance suggested. From the outside, the Banyan Tree Mayakoba looked much smaller than it actually was.
Upon arrival, we were met at the car and quickly escorted into the resort. We spent very little time in the lobby as we were quickly taken to our villa for our check in. But from what we saw, the lobby was elegant and rustic, making good use of the sea breeze and warm Mexican climate.
Reception: Our initial villa host was everything we had could have hoped for. She was informative, kind and very professional. The problem was she was only with us on the first day, and then was off during the next two days we were there. We would have preferred to have the same host for the duration of our stay.
The Villa: The Banyan Tree Mayakoba’s Pool Villa had a lot of positive features. For one thing, the main villa itself was large and spacious.
The villa where the bedroom was located had a delightfully over-sized bathroom. Across the courtyard was the other villa, which housed the living room. In between was the outdoor living area with chairs and dining tables, lounge chairs, a private pool and whirlpool.
We particularly enjoyed the large outdoor soaking tub that was located in a walled area outside the bathroom. Relaxing in it with a glass of champagne surrounded by candle light was the height of perfection
The décor was soothing and upscale, just what we’ve come to expect from the Banyan Tree. It was both elegant and comfortable.
Perhaps our only complaint was that the cushions of the chairs and lounge chairs were in rough shape and the paint around the pool and on the villa itself was peeling in many areas. While this can be a common problem for outdoor furniture, this should nevertheless be addressed.
Room Service: Room service was exceptional in the sense that we were very pleased with the service. The delivery, setup and timeliness met our expectations, but I wish we could say the same for their food. The food was good, but not great. We would have appreciated more diverse offerings, and the quality could use some improvement.
Housekeeping: We requested our evening turndown while we were at dinner and, aside from some instances when housekeeping arrived too early, I’d say we were generally pleased with their service.
Restaurant: We tried Saffron, their signature Thai restaurant, which we will review separately.
Their buffet breakfast featured a huge array of dishes. The quality of the food was excellent, especially for a buffet. The staff was wonderful and quick to help out however they could. Overall, we would rate our dining experience there a 10 out of 10.
Pool/Spa/Activities: The Banyan Tree Mayakoba has many different pools; from the heated pools and whirlpools in the private villas, to the public pools. They also have a beachfront area, which is rather small and can be easily crowded. Their beachfront service though was very good. Their staff was readily available and attentive at all times.
The beach at the Fairmont was large and offered more space to spread out. But if you want to just go for a walk, there is plenty of beachfront to walk along.
Check-Out: As can be expected from a high-quality hotel, check out was fast and easy. Our bags were quickly picked up from our room and transferred to the waiting car for our drive to the airport.
Overall Impression: The Banyan Tree Mayakoba definitely impressed us at almost every turn. The luxuriousness of the property, the privacy of the villas, and the accommodating and cheerful staff definitely made for an enjoyable experience. This resort is definitely Bombastic.
