Tropical luxury in the midst of Manila.

The Shangri-La Edsa hotel in Manila claims of being the only five-star deluxe city convention hotel in the city. With 632 guest-rooms and suites, the hotel offers a tropical holiday setting amidst the lap of luxury. Located in the middle of Ortigas Center’s business and shopping areas, it is an ideal place to stay at when on a holiday. When we arrived at the airport we were met by a Shangri-La representative immediately outside of baggage claim as we had arranged for a pick-up and transfer to Shangri-La Edsa. We were warmly escorted outside and swiftly loaded into a comfortable Mercedes Benz and all our luggage needs were looked into promptly. In 20 minutes we were at the hotel.

First Impression/Lobby: We were met by a guest services representative as soon as we arrived and whisked to our suite so quickly that we never giving us a chance to inspect the lobby. When we got to inspect it later, we saw that the design of the area where the reception desk was quite simple with marbled floors and counters and a low ceiling. Though simple in design, the lobby at Shangri-La Edsa had a definite air of elegance and taste. Out near the main entrance, was a different story; the ceiling was open up to upper floor, grand flower displays, a stylish lobby bar and an expansive space left no doubt we were in a true, five-star luxury hotel.

Reception: The registration was completed in our suite. It was quick, professional and welcoming and gave us a feel that the staff was truly delighted to have us stay at the Shangri-La Edsa. A great start to any holiday.

The Suite: A Tower Suite, the Luzon Suite to be specific was to be our home for our stay at Shangri-La Edsa The suite had made of two rooms; one had a large bedroom with small sitting area and a master bathroom, the second room housed the living room, dining area and bathroom. The two rooms were connected by a space wasting hallway. It was not the very best design of a suite I have ever seen, but it did allow for maximum privacy had we been entertaining.

The rooms were done in soft muted colors of creams and whites with colorful splashes seen in the form of pillows and other accents that brought in a pleasing contrast.

The bedroom was well-lit with dancing sunlight streaming in through the windows making the place look sunny and warm. It had a large comfortable bed with soft duvet and had two bright red pillows giving it the aforementioned splash of color.

The master bathroom was done in gleaming marble with twin sinks, shower/tub combo, a stand-alone shower, toilet and bidet. Bvlgari amenities, large bathrobes and extra large towels were offered completing the luxuriousness of the suite.

The living room was large and comfortable and decorated with beautiful prints framed on the walls. A few lamp stands and curios also acted as elegant ornaments to the room. A plush sofa, a writing desk, a flat screen TV, a DVD entertainment system, coffee/tea making facilities and more offered us all the amenities we could ask for during our stay at the Shangri-La Edsa. The dining room had a table for six and was spacious. The suite was done up with rich tapestries in hues of green and had an elegant look about it.

Room Service: The room service at Shangri-La Edsa was stellar and set-up to cater to all the whims and fancies of their guests. We only used them for breakfast, but the spread and it’s presentation they brought us was memorable to say the least.

Housekeeping: The immaculate appearance and servicing of the suite gave us an idea of the efficient housekeeping the hotel offered. But as we were there only for a night, we were not able to scrutinize it more, but I have a feeling, it would surpass any of expectations.

Concierge: The concierge was professional and warm, but their suggestion of Suji for great sushi in a cool and trendy atmosphere just fell flat.

Restaurant: The Shangri-La Edsa offers a variety of dining options. The HEAT offers Asian and Continental buffet services for all three meals, the Paparazzi offers Italian cuisine for lunch and dinner, Senju offers a sushi bar, teppanyaki and robatayaki counters with a large selection of sake, the Summer Palace serves Cantonese cuisine and The Bakeshop has a selection of cakes, pastries, breads, sandwiches, chocolates and pralines.

You also choose from the bars and lounges at Shangri-La Edsa; the e’s Bar serving tapas and cocktails, the Lobby Lounge which serves beverages, cocktails and short-eats and the Pool Bar where the guests can lounge by the pool and nibble on some finger food and sip on a delicious cocktail.

Pool/Spa/Activities: The Shangri-La Edsa has a fully equipped gym, a spa called CHI offering luxurious treatment, scrubs and more, and an outdoor swimming pool set amidst tropical trees to create a relaxing atmosphere. Being a Sunday the pool was quite crowded with local families enjoying some ‘family-time’ and we found the service at the pool slow and not up to par.

Check-Out: The quick and efficient check-out at the Shangri-La Edsa had us delighted at the professionalism edged with warmth.

Overall Impression: We truly enjoyed our short respite at the Shangri-La Edsa. Aside from the slow and disorganized service at the pool, the rest of our stay spoke volumes of the efficiency of the hotel. We rate it Bombastic and would recommend it to anyone who is stopping over or visiting Manila.
