Amazing Portuguese Dining; A Must When in Lisbon

as Salgadeiras Restaurante – Lisbon (Bairro Alto), Portugal: Recommended to us by the staff at Bairro Alto Hotel where we stayed, as Salgadeiras Restaurante in the Bairro Alto area of Lisbon in Portugal is a nice little cozy restaurant that used to be an old bakery. A quiet place with a superb wine list and a varied selection of traditional Portuguese cuisine, it is the kind of restaurant that can charm the pants off almost anyone. At least, it was exactly what we were looking for.

Like a traditional country cottage, the walls were made of bricks and stones. With just a little imagination, you can picture it as it was years ago when it was a small village bakery. The pale yellow table cloths added a level of elegance, accented by the fine china and unique and stunning stemware. It was a cross between fine dining and rustic casual chic.

For starters we had fish soup, smoked ham with goat’s cheese, and a bed of honey dew Carpaccio. The fish soup was something I would probably not normally order, but it turned out to be wonderful surprise: tasty, refreshing and interesting. It was served in a small crockery bowl with a crust that you need to puncture to get to the soup. Because it was freshly baked out of the oven, however, it was extremely hot, and I almost got burned; but once it cooled down, I really got to enjoy it. It was amazing!

For the main dish we had Veal Stroganoff and Prawn Stroganoff, both served with rice and a rich creamy sauce, topped off with tender veal and fresh prawns respectively. It was heavy and decadent but close to perfection—maybe a bit rich and filling, but again, is that really something to complain about? To complement our dinner, we had a gorgeous Portuguese red wine.

The dessert selection was just as impressive: Chocolate Soufflé, Crème Brule with Black Berries, Coventual Sweet Eggs (traditional sweets made famous by the convents of Portugal in the past), Ice Cream, Fruits and a Portuguese dessert/drink Sorberoska—Lemon Ice Cream with Vodka. The desserts sounded marvelous but the dinner had been so heavy that all we could do was split a sorbet.

Overall the dinner was amazing from start to end: great food, great wine, great service, Simply Bombastic!

Reservations are highly recommended here. For the most quiet and romantic table, book one in the small back room.

Amazing food, amazing service, amazing atmosphere, Salgadeiras was amazing

What I liked: The stroganoff (both kinds), the fish soup, the atmosphere.

What I didn’t like: We had a table close to a busy aisle way.

Rating: Bombastic!
