Sadly, not up to the hype surrounding it.

Oso Italian Restaurant is managed by the famed Stephane Colleoni along with the international award winning chef Diego Charini. This Italian restaurant in Singapore is known to offer multi-regional cuisine from across Italy. Having heard of the popularity of Oso, we were eager to discover this Italian restaurant in Singapore for ourselves.

The First Impression: We were seated at Oso’s Bar which was located on the first level of their two story restaurant/bar, before we were shown to our table. A word of advice for those looking at eating here, make sure to get your reservations done before you step out for a meal. While we were waiting at the bar we were serenaded by a duo at the keyboard and sax playing some lounge music. People were dressed in casual smart to formal outfits. It was a nice atmosphere, but we had come for a great dinner, not to hang out in their bar. And, the worst part of waiting, the service was horrendous! Not a good start to what was supposed to be the best Italian restaurant in Singapore. Our reservation for 9:45 finally materialized at 10:15 at which time we were escorted up to the cramped, second floor dining room.

Decor and Ambience: The low ceiling in this Italian restaurant in Singapore combined with a packed house and extremely loud music wasn’t very comfortable. The décor was very unimpressive. The dark colors didn’t go very well with the small space giving it a confined feeling. The richness of wood and the dark tones was lost on this restaurant. Warmth and a welcoming aura were completely missing from here. The tables were packed close to each other and the buzz of conversation from the neighboring tables quite disturbing. Add in the loud music to this and you will quit trying to have a conversation all together.

The Food: The menu was quite extensive and offered appetizers, salads, soups, meat, fish, pasta, pizza, seafood, cold and hot desserts and more. We were quite impressed by the menu selection in this Italian restaurant in Singapore. I started my order with wild boar pasta and my partner had the ravioli. My dish was quite delicious and the meat sat well on my taste buds without being too strong in flavor (which can easily happen with wild boar). The ravioli too was very tasty.

For our main courses, with high expectations, we both ordered the veal shank. There is nothing better (to us) than a wonderfully prepared veal shank, which at this highly acclaimed Singapore Italian restaurant, should have been a given. But to our dismay, it ended up being quite a disappointment. The presentation was a mess and it looked as though the food was thrown onto the plate in a hurry; globs of meat with potatoes splattered all over. The meat had good flavor, but it wasn’t juicy or tender as veal shank should be, especially at an Italian restaurant of this caliber.

For dessert we had the tiramisu which wasn’t moist or soft, key traits of killer tiramisu. The portion was big and the extra piece of chocolate they added to it didn’t bring out any added flavors. Second-rate!

The Service: The service at this Italian restaurant in Singapore gave us reasons to mutter our annoyance. It was like sitting in an unpleasant express train. They could barely wait to get us out of the restaurant. Within half an hour of us having reached the actual dining room, we were already into our main course. It didn’t give us a feel of slowly relaxing into the evening and enjoying a meal as we should have.

The Calculated Impression: This Italian restaurant in Singapore definitely was not one of the best restaurants in Singapore that we have been to. We also found on checking our bill that we were charged for a full order of pasta when we had only ordered a half-order. As always, be sure to double check your bill, even if you are in one of the so-called best Italian restaurants in Singapore.

Our rating for Oso Italian Restaurant in Singapore is a disappointing Between Bombastic and Not.

What I liked: The extensive menu list that offered something for everyone.

What I didn’t like: The average quality of food, the unimpressive service and the dreadful ambience with its loud music.

Rating: Between Bombastic and Not.
