El Japonese - Barcelona, Spain - Located in City Centre, El Japonese was recommended to us as a good place for sushi.

El Japonés is part of the Grupo Tragaluz chain of hotels and restaurants, of which we had tried their restaurant Tragaluz a day earlier and had some great food, so we thought El Japonés would be worth checking out.

We went there on a Monday night and the place was packed (normally a good sign). The music was hip and trendy; the decor was minimalist yet trendy. It was so busy we actually had to wait for a table. The suggested we wait across the street in the casual bar of Tragaluz so we would be more comfortable. Our 15 minute wait turned into a 45 minute wait but finally they came and got us.

Once we were finally seated we had a chance to check out the menu. We realized El Japonés is not a Sushi restaurant but an Asian restaurant with a few sushi selections.

We had already invested almost an hour of time so we decided to stay and give it a go. To our dismay, the few Sushi choices they did have were very typical and safe, nothing new or exciting. The Sashimi portions were extremely small (must be to keep in step with the minimalist decor) and again, not a big selection.

The wine list was very small and what they did have was not impressive.

Service was decent but on the slow side. For a place as big as this and for as busy as it was they could have used a few more servers.

El Japonés is surely not a 5 star restaurant and it's definitely not a Sushi restaurant. What it is, in my opinion, is a trendy place that people go to so they can say they have been there.

The food, the wine list, the service do not explain why it is so busy. Apparently, Grupo Tragaluz has done a good job of marketing it.
