Barrique Wine Bar – Zurich, Switzerland:
Barrique Wine Bar or “vinotheque” is built around its motto, “Wine and Dine Till Late.” Located in the heart Niederdorf, Zurich’s entertainment district, Barrique is a popular hangout for young people, particularly a place for unwinding after-hours.

Personally, however, there’s nothing much to say about this place. We were there on a week night and it was packed. The bar was extremely smoky and the acoustics were bad. Chatter from every corner bounced on the walls and rung in our ears. Needless to say, it was hard to get a decent conversation in a place supposedly designed for all-night drinking and talking. The décor was average and ho-hum, I’ve definitely seen better. It was the usual large picture windows, predominantly white walls and rosewood formica tables and stools. It gave me the impression that they were trying for chic and trendy but weren’t able to pull it off well.

The service was fairly good but that doesn’t say much; for being a wine bar, the wine list was so-so, which was simply inexcusable. Prices are comparably reasonable (but then in Zurich, everything is expensive).

I expected so much more from a wine bar in Zurich. I rate the disappointing Barrique Wine Bar Between Bombastic and Not.

What I liked: It was the only wine bar in town we could find, so I like that fact there actually a wine bar in Zurich.


What I didn’t like: too smoky, too loud
