In one word... Bombastic!

Singta Faru Faru Lodge - Grumeti Reserves, Tanzania: The Singita Faru Faru lodge is located on the banks of the Grumeti River in the Grumeti Reserve, bordering the Serengeti National Park in Tanzania. This lodge, built in the style of a classic East African safari camp, sits in the path of the world-renowned Serengeti wildbeest migration. Click here to see over 60 pictures of Faru Faru and the surrounding area.

Built on a sloping hill, Faru Faru overlooks a watering hole and the tree-line of the Grumeti River. A contemporary style safari camp, Faru Faru offers seven suits, one family suite and one villa suite made of stone and canvas. The design of these suites and villa reflect a bygone Colonial era. This laid back rustic lodge is inspired by a botanical theme.

Daily flights are available from Kilimanjaro International Airport and Arusha to Sasakwa Airstrip. From Sasakwa, Faru Faru is just a comfortable drive away. We visited Faru Faru after spending three days at the Sabora Tented Camp. Click here to read our review of Singta Sabora Tented Camp. The camps are located about 45 minutes apart.

First Impression/Lobby: The main gathering area at Faru Faru is quite casual and consists of a dining room, lounge and bar, outdoor barbeque area and The Singita Shop. My favorite spot here was the heated swimming pool that overlooked a watering hole. Herds of elephants turned up at this watering hole on all the days we were there. Elevated viewing decks overlooking the watering hole were positioned alongside the pool. These viewing decks allowed us to view the elephants without leaving the lodge.

Reception: In standard safari fashion, we were met at the entrance to the lodge by the camp manager and escorted down to the main lobby. Here, we were offered cool towels and cold drinks to refresh ourselves. As we had already prepaid for our stay, it was a quick welcome before we headed to our suite.

The Suite: Our suite with its floor-to-ceiling windows overlooked the river. Though the river wasn’t full of water, it still had some large pools that attracted herds of elephants. I loved sitting in a canvas lounge chair on the deck in the afternoon and watching the elephants. The early mornings were just as special as there was a troop of baboons sleeping in the trees across the river and watching them wake up and start their day was so much fun.

Our suite was equipped with a reading area, bar, refrigerator, electronic safe, air conditioning and even a hairdryer (who on safari, bothers with that?). A huge picture window, mirrored room divider and a deck with a Swarovski spotting scope were the other main attractions. Direct dial telephones with US lines and wireless internet access was also available. The suite was also equipped with a dressing area, claw foot bath and an open air shower.

Room Service: Same as our stay at Sabora Tented Camp, we did not have our meals in the suite as we wanted to spend every waking moment (even while dining) spotting birds and wildlife.

Housekeeping: Our suite was serviced twice a day. Though quite close to perfection, the housekeeping at Faru Faru was definitely not quite as good as at the Sabora Tented Camp.

Concierge: All concierge related issues were handled by the camp manger with perfection.

Restaurant: The food at Faru Faru was light, good and Med-inspired. However, the menu tended to have more fried foods and less inventive cuisine when compared to Sabora Tented Camp. The wine list was decent with a good selection of wines. The majority of these were from South Africa. We enjoyed relaxing around the communal fire pit while sipping drinks.

Pool/Spa/Activities: Faru Faru ‘s daily safari schedule consists of game drives in the early morning and evening as well as walks along the Grumeti River. A balloon safari across the plains of the Serengeti is also on offer. Archery, stargazing safaris and mountain biking are the other activities available at the lodge.

There are two swimming pools at Faru Faru. Both overlook the nearby watering holes. One of the pool areas has been designed to resemble a miniature beach.

The bar lounge is equipped with a satellite television, DVD player and library. Wireless internet access is available at the main lodge.

The Spa offers a range of treatments such as hand and foot treatments, facials, massage and full body treatments. A fully equipped gym is also available at the lodge.

Check-Out: As everything was prepaid, our check-out process was quick and efficient.

Overall Impression: The atmosphere, design and décor of the place puts Faru Faru in the top two or three of our favorite safari camps. Service here was almost as incredible as the Sabora Tented Camp. The Singita Faru Faru lodge easily gets a Bombastic rating from us.
