Four Star Hotel, Five Star Service

Novotel Suvarnabhumi Airport Hotel – Bangkok, Thailand: There’s no chance you’ll miss an early morning flight in Bangkok if you stay in this excellent four-star hotel. Designed specifically for transit travelers staying a night or two in Thailand’s capital, the Novotel Suvarnabhumi Airport Hotel is only a ten-minute walk from the airport, and if you don’t feel like walking, there is a 24-hour shuttle service every 10 minutes at Gate 4.

We stayed at the Novotel on our way to Tokyo from Kuala Lumpur. We arrived at about 11 PM and left the next morning around 8 AM so our whole stay was just long enough for a quick dinner via room service, sleep, and an early checkout. From beginning to end, the hotel delivered impeccably—providing us with a pleasant, luxurious and seamless experience.

From the outside, the hotel looked unremarkable—a boxy modern high-rise building. Inside, however, was everything you would expect from a world-class hotel: an expansive lobby area, six restaurants, a spa, a pool area, and a shopping area—all carefully designed to meet contemporary tastes.

For a four-star hotel, the service at the Novotel exceeded all expectations. The service from the front desk to the bellman to room service was unbelievable—warm, friendly, professional, and helpful. More than once I thought to myself how the service here was better than at some five-star properties I’ve been to.

Our room, while small, was incredibly clean and comfortable. The bathroom was tiled with marble and had a single sink, toilet, stand alone shower and a separate deep soaking tub. While it wasn’t luxurious or overly spacious, it was adequate enough for an overnight stay.

The room service menu consisted of the standard hotel fare—soups, salads, burgers, and pizza, plus a nice selection of Thai dishes. We ordered a late snack of burger and a pizza, and as promised, the food was delivered within 30 minutes. The burger and pizza were satisfying and tasted as good as any room service food from any five-star hotel.

What impressed me the most about Novotel was the extremely high level of hospitality and service. For a four-star hotel, they make you feel as if you were staying at a five-star luxury hotel. Add to that the convenient location and the super clean, comfortable and well appointed rooms, I rate the four star (which has a lower set of standards that we rank against compared to a five star property) Novotel Suvarnabhumi Airport Hotel as Bombastic.
