Prego's Italian Restaurant at Beach Rotana Hotel – Abu Dhabi: While staying at the Beach Rotana Hotel in Abu Dhabi, we decided to dine al fresco at Prego’s Italian Restaurant, just one of the hotel’s 10 restaurants to choose from. Casual and contemporary in design, Prego exudes a pleasant atmosphere with its light wood tables and chairs, open bar, and a terrace for dining outside. A little stream runs alongside the deck, providing a Zen-like ambiance.

This restaurant in Abu Dhabi doesn’t have the warm and cozy feel of a traditional Italian restaurant, but they offer a decent selection of salads, antipasti, platters of meats, and classic Italian favorites. Pasta is made fresh daily and pizzas are baked in a traditional wood-fired oven.

For starters, we ordered the Margherita pizza (tomato, mozzarella and basil) upgraded with buffalo mozzarella, instead of the usual cow’s milk. It was pretty ordinary, crunchy on the outside, but nothing to set it apart from your neighborhood Italian restaurant. For our main course we had the beef-filled ravioli, tossed in a natural veal jus and stuffed with mushrooms and baby spinach. This one I really enjoyed and would order it again in a heartbeat. My dining partner had the homemade pasta garden herbs with cepe mushrooms, smoked turkey, asparagus and black truffle oil. Like the ravioli, this pasta was quite delicious, better than average, but not so good you’d “die for it”.

For our sweets we had ice cream and my dining partner and had the profiteroles filled with Malaga rum raisin ice cream and chocolate sauce, as well as strawberry and vanilla ice cream. Delicious!

Service at Prego was fairly attentive but I can't say that they were the best; perhaps a bit more warmth and friendliness could improve their service. If I find myself staying in the Beach Rotana Hotel again (which I doubt I would), and in the mood for a casual Italian lunch, I would probably eat at Prego’s restaurant Abu Dhabi, but I would not go out of my way to drive and dine there. Overall our rating for Prego is Between Bombastic and Not.
