Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park Hotel - London, England: We were in London for a long weekend and needed to change hotels, so we looked for hotels near Hyde Park to see what five-star hotels London had to offer. Hopefully, we could find a London new hotel or at least some 5 Star London hotels that had been recently updated. With all the luxury, high-end and five-star hotels London has, it wasn't too hard to find one that would meet our needs.

We found many hotels near Hyde Park but the one that that caught our attention was not a London new hotel, but a hotel that has been around for many years, the Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park Hotel.

Located in Hyde Park, the Mandarin Oriental London was definitely one of the many hotels near Hyde Park and with its stunning views of the park and proximity to the shopping on Knightsbridge, it was the best five-star hotel London could have for us! So, we booked ourselves a Junior Suite with a view of the park and made our way to what would be one of the best 5 Star London Hotels. First Impression/Lobby: We pulled up in front of the stately Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park Hotel and were met by a doorman, sharply dressed in red blazer and tall black top hat. Very sharp, very regal, very five-star! We were escorted inside and into the marble lobby. And by marble, I mean marble! Marble stairs, marble floors, marble walls, gorgeous! At the top of the stairs, on either side were the concierge desks and across the small lobby floor, was a large fireplace flanked by two upholstered side chairs. This was easily one of the most impressive entrances I have seen in any of the 5 Star London hotels I have visited.

Reception: The reception desk was located around the corner and as we approached we were warmly greeted and it was as if they had been expecting us, almost like we were regular guests returning for another visit. We asked the young lady in reception about a late check-out, breakfast and a myriad of other items, each of which she was able to answer quickly and efficiently. She swiftly completed our registration and called the Manager on Duty to escort us to our room. The front desk agent was pleasant, knowledgeable and seemed sincerely happy we were checking in to what I'm sure she considered, the best five-star hotel London had to offer. What a welcome change from the luxury hotel where we had just come from!

The Suite: Our Junior Suite, a Hyde Park Junior Suite, number 421 was enormous! We later found out that this particular Junior Suite was larger than most of the others suites of this category. Even if it had been one of their regular junior suites; it still would have been larger than the junior suite we had stayed in the night before.

As we walked in to the room, the bed was to the right and along the wall on the left was a row of closets, offering tons of closet space, what a bonus. In front of the fireplace, were two side chairs; across the room, in front of the two large windows which offered views of the park, was a wooden desk and chair, and a small seating area which included a sofa and two more side chairs. The bedspread and upholstery were done in shades of maroon, purple, gold and tan, giving it a warm, upscale, elegant, trendy yet traditional feel.

Off from the main entrance was the large, white marble bathroom which had a standalone shower, huge, deep bathtub, single basin sink, toilet and bidet. A ceiling to floor glass and wood framed door on the far wall let the daylight shine through, giving the bathroom a bright, airy feel. The amenities in the bathroom were from Jo Malone.

Our junior suite at the Mandarin Oriental London was simply amazing. I don’t think there were any other hotels near Hyde Park that could come close to measuring up, even if it were a London new hotel or any of the other 5 star London hotels.

Room Service: While we never got to try room service, I did check out their room service menu and it was one of the most extensive menus I have seen in a very long time. The Western portion of the menu had something for everyone and there was a separate Arabic section. The breakfast section even had a Japanese breakfast. Very impressive indeed!

Housekeeping: As with everything else at this Mandarin Oriental London Hotel, housekeeping was spot-on perfect.

Concierge: The Concierges at the Mandarin London were true professionals. Their recommendations were excellent, as was their follow through. I can often tell a lot about a hotel by their concierge staff, and here at the Mandarin London, they were bombastic! They made terrific London trip-advisors.

Restaurants: The Mandarin Oriental London was in the process of opening their newest restaurant Bar Boulud by world renowned chef Daniel Boulud. While we were there they had not actually opened yet, but if you have ever dined at any of his restaurants, you would know that having one of his restaurants in the Mandarin Orienatl London will be a big coup to all the other five-star hotels London has in the area and especially for those five-star hotels near Hyde Park.

The will also be closing their current restaurant and opening a restaurant by Heston Blumenthal, one of UK’s most renowned chefs of the Fat Duck Group.

The Mandarin London also has the Mandarin Bar which serves up cool drinks in an even cooler atmosphere. The weekend I was there, they had a jazz trio playing at night. It was the perfect place to relax at the end of a long day after reviewing restaurants and sightseeing.

Pool/Spa/Activities: Located on the basement floor, the Mandarin Oriental London has The Spa at Mandarin Oriental London which has been consistently voted one of the best urban spas in England. The spa has eight treatment rooms, a vitality pool, fitness center, boutique and offers a full array of spa treatments.

Check-Out: Our stay at the Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park Hotel had gone much too quickly and the time had come for us to depart. In true Mandarin fashion, everything on our bill was 100% accurate and it took just minutes to settle our bill. I have been to other 5 star London hotels where checking out was a huge hassle, here though, it was simple, as it should be.

Overall Impression The Mandarin London is unlike any other hotels near Hyde Park in London. Perfection at every step of the way gives the Mandarin Oriental in London our highest luxury hotel score of fantastic bombastic.
