Amway Grand - Grand Rapids, Michigan - Luxury Hotel Review

A Gem of a Hotel at One Time; Now Just Worn and Dated.

Amway Grand – Grand Rapids, Michigan: The Amway Grand is no doubt one of the most spectacular buildings in the Grand Rapids. A classical architecture designed by the same people who conceived of the Grand Central Station in New York, the Amway Grand is in itself a tourist attraction. Inside, the hotel’s lobby is just as magnificent. There, you will look up in awe to the largest gold-leafed ceilings in the world. The moment you walk in the hotel’s entrance you are transported back in time, in some elegant classical setting.

To my unpleasant surprise, the magnificence of the hotel ended there. We had a suite, supposedly one of the best rooms in the hotel, a luxury tower suite. The room was quite the opposite of grand as it was oddly small and in dire need of a facelift. Its design was rather bleak and outdated-- the gold-and-maroon motif and the heavy dark wood furniture did nothing to class up the room. I understand that they were sticking to the traditional theme of the hotel, but instead of achieving “classic elegance,” what they got was simply “uninteresting.” The bathroom maintained an old-style shower and bathtub combo, and had a sink built into a raised marble counter top.

On top of a dull accommodation, the service at the hotel was poor. The room service menu was limited and very typical of a run-of-the-mill hotel. The service was inefficient and I had to wait 45 minutes for a simple order of tonic water. I have to say, though, that the bellman and valet parking attendant did an excellent job as they were very attentive and helpful.

Other than the public areas and some amazing restaurants, the hotel is average, average, average. There aren't a lot of choices in Grand Rapids but luckily there is a new JW Marriot (same owners as the Amway) across the street. Service is not a lot better but at least the accommodations there are up-to-date. Overall, my experience in the Amway Grand was between bombastic and not.
