An LEED Gold restaurant, Founding Farmers is also a Certified Green Restaurant. Low voltage lighting is used throughout this restaurant. The eco-friendly interiors are done up in weathered-wood accents and burnished metal. This two storied restaurant had a casual and inviting atmosphere.
We were at Founding Farmers for breakfast. It was freezing outside. To our surprise, it was very cold inside. Our waitress told us they were having a hard time getting the heat from the second level to come down to the first floor. Not good at all in terms of a first impression and so much for the Green certification, I guess! The menu consisted of typical American breakfast fare such as French toast, waffles, pancakes, Eggs Benedict, Eggs Florentine, bacon and hash browns.
We started our breakfast with Organic Granola Parfait with oats, nuts, dried fruit, seasonal fresh fruit and organic low fat yogurt, which was average at best. For the main course, I ordered The Hangover Special (not that I needed it, it just sounded good). It was made up of a three egg-Pimento cheese omelet, beef chili, onions and Tillamook cheddar cheese. It was tasty, but it would have been probably better if I actually had been hung over. I’d order it again, but I am not so sure I’d go out of my way to go back there.
My partner had the Eggs Florentine. The sauce in this dish was not tasty and really over-powered the eggs. It was so bad that he had to send it back. Our waitress was quite wonderful about this and quickly brought him a Hangover Special as a replacement. That is what I call great service!
Service at Founding Farmers was great. But the food was just so-so. Would I recommend this restaurant as a must visit spot for breakfast in Washington DC? No. It’s a safe bet but I’m not sure I would go out of my way to go back (especially on a freezing cold day). Our rating for this restaurant is Almost Bombastic.
What I liked: The casual atmosphere
What I didn’t like: The average food
Rating: Almost Bombastic
