Good Enough to Eat - New York, NY - A good place for breakfast is a rare find. With restaurants in New York getting all fancy, a restaurant serving good home-style, country breakfast is one that people are scurrying around for these days. This is where Good Enough to Eat steps in and takes the claim of being one of the restaurants that serve the best breakfast in New York. The brainchild of Carrie Levin, Good Enough to Eat saw its genesis after she decided that New York was in dire need of a restaurant that served ‘good old fashioned American food. So she partnered with a take-out and catering business owner Ann Nickinson, and Amsterdam Avenue soon saw Good Enough to Eat deck its street.

The First Impression: We already had a good impression of the place because the concierge of The Mandarin Oriental Hotel that we were staying at recommended the place to us and in our experience we have learnt that any place that deems a recommendation by a concierge is generally on par with expectations. On walking in, you are aware of the hustle and bustle of a warm home-style buzz in the restaurant. The outside has a small sitting area enclosed by picket fences; clean and comfortable with no great frills about it. But the inside had quite the country home-style pantry feel.

Décor and Ambience: The décor was cozy, quaint and charming; one felt immediately at home amongst the friendly service and wafting aromas of delicious food. With wooden chairs and tables set for you to have your meal in, the room was splayed with cupboards of quaint jars and plates, an exposed brick wall covered in quilts and knick-knacks, and a cow motif exuding the county feel of the room. The outside area offered a nice view of the Upper West Side area of the Amsterdam Avenue. A perfect place to laze about in and observe people passing by.

The Food: Good Enough to Eat offers a great breakfast menu besides the usual lunch, dinner, delivery and dessert menus. They also have a special kid’s menu on offer. Since the celebrated menu on offer was definitely the breakfast menu; that was what we were here for. The breakfast menu was great; a selection of pancakes, waffles, French toasts, eggs made in different ways, a special list of delicious omelets, fruit plates, sandwiches and a choice of beverages that range from hot beverages to juices and more. My order of pancakes was absolutely delicious. Soft and fluffy, cooked to perfection and melting in bites in the mouth.

The Service: The service at Good Enough to Eat was friendly and casual. The waiters helped us out with order suggestions and were present without being too intrusive. They were attentive and made the experience quite pleasant in a very homely way.

The Calculated Impression: Good Enough to Eat definitely ranks as one of the places to dash to for the best breakfast in New York. With the way it is done up, I would say it is more apt for a breakfast place than one for lunch and dinner where you look for a different kind of ambience. But I strongly recommend the place to people who are in Amsterdam Avenue in New York.

What I liked: The amazing quality of breakfast and the home-style decor of the place.

What I didn’t like: The crowded feel you get while sitting inside which is fine for breakfast, but not for the other meals.

Rating: Between Bombastic and Not.
