Old Ebbitt Grill – Washington, DC While soaking in the history in Washington, DC, we found ourselves hankering for good ‘ol Americana cuisine. Asking around, we were intrigued by the Old Ebbitt Grill, an authentic old-timey saloon steeped in history. Located at 675 15th street near the US Department of Treasury, we figured: what better way to dine in Washington than in the oldest DC restaurant in town?

We had reservations at 6pm on a Wednesday night, and the place was full of people though not jam-packed. Our first impression was how gorgeous the place was. There were cozy booths with plush velvet couches, and each table had its own coat hanger; a nice touch especially during wintertime. The bar had an old western look with stools all lined up. Paintings were present all around, but the most striking piece was the one hanging over our heads. Every nook and cranny exuded an historical feel, yet the place was decorated not what you’d consider outdated, but rather classic and timeless.

When we arrived we were shown to our seats almost immediately, and our servers were very professional, although service overall was a bit lacking in warmth.

To enjoy the most out of an American restaurant, we decided to go all-American with our food as well. So I had the Cheeseburger while my partner had the Crab Cakes. My Cheeseburger was very good, though the fries that came with it were perfect - crispy, flavorful and with just the right amount of salt. The Crab Cakes, on the other hand, were simply divine. I took a bite out of my partner’s crab cake since he was raving non-stop about how good it was. I must admit, I was surprised as well. I’m not much of a crab cake fan, but this particular dish was more crab than cake!

For dessert, we had the Peanut Butter Pie, and it didn’t disappoint. One of the better Peanut Butter pies I’ve had in recent years.

In all, the Old Ebbitt Grill gets an Almost Bombastic rating from us. Why not a Bombastic rating, you ask? Well, despite the good food, nice ambience and near-perfect service, we found it to be a bit too touristy. Plus, prices were a little on the steep side, and though the food was good, it surely didn’t justify the inflated price.

What I liked: Beautiful ambience, great food, good service

What I didn’t like: The prices

Rating: Almost Bombastic
