Sei Sushi Restaurant - Washington, DC: Located in the Penn Quarter neighborhood along 7th Street in Washington, D.C., Sei Sushi is highly regarded as one of the best places for sushi in DC.

We went to the restaurant for dinner, and aimed to see if the place deserved all its accolades.

We arrived on what seemed to be a quiet night for Sei Sushi, it was not too busy but we think that on a busy night, the place might be overbearing. Our first impression was that it was a very beautiful restaurant. The place was tastefully designed with white leather chairs and white tables, complemented by woodsy accents like the blonde colored hardwood floor. Soft lounge music was playing in the background, though it was not very loud and the decibel level was good for conversation.

Servers were dressed in typical black and we were quickly tended to once we were seated.

We found a place to sit almost immediately, and proceeded to begin our night with some drinks. I had the Asian Pear Sangria, which was a mix of pear vodka, vanilla, sparkling wine and pear puree, while my partner had the No. 6, a cocktail mix of Blanco Tequila, strawberries, cinnamon and Ginger Vuzu soda. Both drinks were pretty tasty with a moderate kick.

We then ordered some rolls, ready to judge for ourselves if this was indeed the best place for Sushi in DC. The rolls that we had were an original and intriguing mix of East-meets-West flavors:

Fish and Chips – Flounder, malt vinegar, potato crisps and wasabi tartar
Kobe Tataki – Spicy crunch, watercress oil and red wine ponzu
Spicy Salmon Cilantro – Fresh salmon, spring roll crunch, cilantro with spicy miso
Tuna Serrano – Zuke tuna, arugula, creamy ponzu, honey balsamic and serrano pepper

The rolls were fantastic and we would definitely go out of our way to eat here again.

Their selection of white wines was moderately priced at about $45-50, though there were a few in the $75-100 range. Reds were a little more expensive, but not shockingly so.

In all, we give Sei Sushi a rating of Bombastic. The food was great, the drinks were good, the service was attentive, the place was beautiful and the ambience was relaxing. If you are looking for good sushi in DC in a upscale and relaxed setting, then Sei Sushi is where you should be.

What I liked: Attentive service, good food, beautiful place

What I didn’t like: Not much of anything

Rating: Bombastic
