Originally built in 1910, The US Grant hotel is a palatial 11-story property located at the northern edge of the Gaslamp Quarter. A part of the Starwood Hotel & Resorts Luxury Collection, this hotel is located just 2.5 miles away from San Diego's International Lindberg Field Airport.

The US Grant has been ranked among the top three tourist and convention destinations in the United Sates. The perfect location of the hotel provides easy access to the main shopping, dining and entertainment destinations in down town San Diego. The US Grant hotel’s Celebration Fine Art Gallery, voted the best gallery in San Diego, houses a collection of museum-quality fine art and antiques. These include sculptures, ironwork, murals and paintings from French and Native American artistes.

All of The US Grant hotel’s 270 guest rooms including the 47 suites have 9-foot ceilings with crown molding and are decorated with classic Empire-style furnishings. A custom Yves Clement drip-painting headboard lends a contemporary touch to each room.

First Impression/Lobby: The US Grant lobby has an elegant and stylish décor and is decorated with sparkling crystal chandeliers, silk carpets and modern artwork. The lobby is well appointed with numerous sofas and chairs for guests to relax in.

Reception: The check in process was fast and efficient. In fact, we were on our way to the Landmark Suite within minutes.

The Suite: Our Landmark Suite consisted of a living room and separated bedroom and bathroom. The living room was furnished with chairs, a sofa and Empire-style coffee and side tables. The work area was equipped with wireless high speed internet access, voice mail and a dual-line cordless telephone.

A flat screen television, a CD player clock radio and a pillow top Luxury Collection bed enhanced with Italian linens sums up the plush bedroom that was divided from the salon by a wall. The marble bathroom was also well appointed with a tub, shower, basin sinks and plush bathrobes with slippers. Top of the line Crabtree & Evelyn toiletries were provided in the bathroom.

The clock radio was playing soft jazz when we entered. Local magazines were laid out neatly in the sitting area. In all, our room was gorgeous and comfortable, like the rest of the hotel.

Room Service: Room service was attentive and personalized and available 24 hours a day. We ordered two different times (breakfast and a late night snack) and both times our orders were delivered accurately and within the 30 minutes we were quoted.

Housekeeping: Housekeeping at The US Grant was invisible, thorough and consistent, three of the most important traits when it comes to housekeeping in my opinion. The nightly turn-down service was quite an experience as after the bed was remade, robes were placed on our bed, pillows were fluffed and two high-end chocolates were placed on the pillow. Also two pairs of US Grant slippers were set out by our bedside and the music and lighting were turned down to low.

Concierge: The 24 hour concierge team was highly knowledgeable, especially the young lady who helped us was phenomenal. She gave a couple of great recommendations (read our restaurant review of Searsucker, our favorite restaurant she recommended) and was full of spark and energy. She represented the hotel very well.

Restaurant: The Art Deco-style Grant Grill is a premier spot for lunch and dinner in San Diego. This Zagat-winning restaurant serves authentic Californian cuisine complemented by local and international wines and beers. The graceful wood paneling provides a perfect contrast to the creamy white leather booths and cream linens. The menu is seasonal and incorporates market-fresh produce and fresh Pacific seafood.

The Grant Grill Lounge also follows an Art Deco influenced design and is appointed with elevated community tables, contemporary furnishings and a sleek granite-top bar. Signature drinks at the Lounge include 100 Day Barrel Aged Centennial Manhattan and rotating, seasonal cocktails. The popular items from the kitchen are the "Bangers & Mash" with house-made sausages and the "Fried Egg Sandwich" along with shareable sides such as the Truffle Fries or Charcuterie Plate.

The Lobby Lounge serves pre-dinner aperitifs in an opulent setting consisting of marble floors, plush couches and crystal chandeliers. The signature Ulysses Vodkatini, features Belvedere Vodka, a touch of Martini Extra Dry and olives. Drinks are accompanied by complimentary homemade snacks from 4:30pm to 7:30pm.

Pool/Spa/Activities: The spa treatments at The US Grant are the courtesy of Away Spa by W Hotels. These treatments can be conducted in the hotel’s treatment suite or in the guest room. The complimentary Fitness Center is located on the lower level of the hotel and is equipped with state-of-the-art machines and amenities.

A Business Center equipped with three computers, a laptop dock station, printer, photocopier and fax is also available for guests. In addition, complimentary wireless internet access is accessible throughout the lobby.

Check-Out: As with everything else at The US Grant, the check-out process was quick and extremely professional. There is nothing better than receiving an accurate bill and being treated like your business is really appreciated, at The US Grand did just that.

Overall Impression: Overall, The US Grant fulfilled all our expectations and kept true to its tag line, “Historic, Original, Elegant and Sexy”. This hotel had everything that a hotel needs to get a rating of Bombastic!
