Situated just a short distance from the Sheraton, my partner and I accidently stumbled upon Jaspas. We gave this restaurant a try since it appeared to have a trendy feel with a good mix of expats and high-end Vietnamese.
Jaspas stands out on the busy Dong Khoi Street corner with its yellow roof tiles. The restaurant has a stylish European décor and offers dining downstairs, upstairs and on the balcony overlooking the Dong Khoi Street. The seating on the terrace enables diners to watch the world go by in this bustling Saigon street. A box of crayons is kept on the tables lined with paper tablecloths. These help to keep people of all ages entertained and occupied till the food arrives.
Jaspas offers a varied collection Australian, Mexican and Vietnamese foods. The menu ranges from Vietnamese spring rolls, tempura, noodles, fajitas, burritos and pasta to seafood, lamb, salads, steaks, pizzas and burgers. A good number of options were available for vegetarians. Set lunch consisted of an appetizer, a main dish and a dessert along with tea/coffee. Jaspas also has a good selection of wines, beers and cocktails. This place is famous for its wicked margaritas.
I had the Vietnamese Noodles with seafood and traditional Vietnamese noodles and vegetables while my partner had the Penne Arrabbiata with chicken. The food turned out to be quite a damper as both the dishes were bland. The Vietnamese Noodles was tasteless and “BORING”. Needless to say, the sauce that accompanied the Penne Arrabbiata followed this trend and was dull and disappointing. The chicken in this dish (which they had charged extra for) was almost non-existent.
Service was decent, but it could not make up for the average food. Even though Jaspas has good reviews on Trip Advisor, it could barely reach the level of “Between Bombastic and Not” according to my experience. I cannot recommend Jaspas for anything other than drinks or snacks. If you are looking for a “great lunch or dinner”, it would be better to look elsewhere.
Our rating for Jaspas is Between Bombastic and Not.
