La Camargue - Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam: Just off Ha Ba Trung St., we went to La Camargue looking for a great dining experience. Branding itself as a French restaurant, we expected to have a night of fine dining. However, upon arrival, we found it was more relaxed and casual. Not a problem since we were here primarily for the food.

The restaurant itself is quite lovely. High ceilings with exposed beams add to its charm, while the lighting is a bit subdued to give the place a relaxed feel. We situated ourselves on the second level; however, being an open air restaurant, and Vietnam being a tropical country, the heat overtook us and it took away from of our dining experience. There was a small private dining room, or function room with air condition downstairs, but it was closed and we were left to contend with the stifling heat.

What we had:

For our entrée, we had the Salade Compsee aux Copeaux De Jambon Serrano. Basically slices of Serrano Ham spread over mixed “oriental” salad. It was decent but not great.

We then had the Tagliatelle aux Deux Saumon A La Crème, which was smoked and fresh salmon in a cream sauce. It was tasty, though not earth-shatteringly good.

For our main dish, we had the Magret De Canard aux 5Poivres, Poelee d’Haricots Verts Sautees A Lail. A dish of grilled and sliced duck breast, seasoned with 5 peppers, and green beans sautéed in garlic. This dish was surprisingly good. It wasn’t the best duck I’ve had, but it is the highlight of the night.

Finally, for dessert we had a simple Crème Brulee with 3 different flavors. Simple but satisfying.

Service was decent, though it’s not to the level I know Vietnam can offer.

Overall, we give the restaurant an Almost Bombastic rating. Food was decent, though we didn’t leave feeling super impressed; service was decent; ambience was casual and unique, though the heat was a bother; and honestly speaking, I was a bit disappointed that we picked La Camargue with just a few days in Ho Chi Minh. The city has a lot of restaurant to choose from, and I was really hoping for a better dining experience than what we had at La Camargue. Charge it to experience I guess.

What I liked: The grilled duck

What I didn’t like: Mediocre service, mediocre food, the heat,

Rating: Almost Bombastic
