The prospect of our American Airlines business class flight from Chicago to London had me eager to see what just what this American Airlines international flight had to offer on this seven hour and twenty minute journey. (Click here to read our Chicago hotel and restaurant reviews and click here to read our London hotel and restaurant reviews.)

Check-In: The American Airlines counter at Chicago International had a dedicated business class check-in line so the process was a quick and efficient as I could have hoped for.

Boarding: The American Airlines Flight’s business class passengers and the first-class passengers were boarded together at the same time along with holders of elite loyalty cards. This ended up being quite a large group but somehow it all went quickly with the normal hassles that boarding often brings.

First Impressions: The American Airlines cabin gave me a favorable first impression. The interiors appeared quite classy in appearance and were up-to-date offering amenities of the latest standards. The simple touches in service like offering water and juice and Champagne, though cheap-tasting, extended a nice welcoming touch and made me ready for the international flight ahead of me.

The Cabin: The business class cabin offered five rows of seating with a 2 x 3 x 2 configuration. The seats were comfortable and 20 inches wide, giving me plenty of room to settle down in. The American Airlines Flight had amenity kits waiting for all its business class passengers in their cabin seats. The kits included Burt’s Bees Natural earth friendly personal care products like balms, lotions and more, an eye-mask, a pair of socks, dental-care kits, ear plugs, a pen, a few mints and some tissues which are placed in the zipper-style case in a carry-bag. Besides the kit they also had a pillow and duvet waiting for us.

The interior colors used in the cabin were in shades of grey giving the fight a pleasant upscale look. The hostess took our coats on boarding and brought us Bose® QuietComfort® 15 Acoustic Noise Cancellation® headphones which are exclusive of American Airlines flights. The seats were motorized and could be angled to make it flat with the seat controls. The leather headrest could be adjusted six-ways and could be moved forward for more privacy. There are privacy dividers and the cabins offered additional legroom and the seats were designed to offer lumbar support and under-calf support. But in spite of all the careful designing, I somehow found the incline of the seat uncomfortable to lie down flat in and found myself slipping off the seat. Individual laptop power-ports were also offered. The cabins at the business-class section of the American Airlines flights offered a lot of storage space because of its design. A personal video offered a lot of different documentaries, movies and more to choose from.

The Flight (Service/Food/Drink): The service on this American Airlines flight was quite faultless. The presentation was very well-done and they used real china and proper glasses to serve food and drinks. The first class and business class passengers were also given Fast Track cards which allowed us to get through immigration upon arrival.

As this was an evening flight, we started with dinner. The menu offered quite an array of choices to choose from, including:

Soup: Lemon Grass Consomme.
Salad: Fresh greens with olives, tomatoes, artichokes and pepper roasted chicken.
Main Course: A choice of Mango Chile Beef, Seared Balsamic Chicken, Cheese Ravioli or Fruit and Cheese Plate.
Dessert: Ben and Jerry’s Vanilla Heath Bar Crunch with cocoa dusted almonds/ Fruit and cheese (Ancho chile caciotta and Sage Derby cheese accompanied with fresh grapes).
Champagne: Nicolas Feuillatte Brut Reserve Particulier.
White Wine: Scarbolo Chardonnay from Northeast Italy and Seven Sisters “Vivian” Sauvignon Blanc from Western South Africa.
Red Wine: Freemark Abbey Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon and Cyan Prestigio
Sherry: Emilio Lustau Sherry.
Dessert Wine: Graham’s Vintage Port.

I chose the grilled beef for my meal and it was served with a mango chile demi-glace, blue cheese, potatoes and carrots. Admittedly, it was no fine-dining, but for an airline beef fillet it was really quite good and the meat was well prepared. Service throughout dinner was attentive, and I have to say, for what I was expecting from this American Airlines flight, I was extremely impressed.

After dinner I flipped the numerous channels before turning in for the night. Shortly before landing, I awoke to the scent and clamor of breakfast.

For breakfast they offered a choice between a Three Cheese Omelet, Yogurt and Cereal plus a selection of breakfast breads. But having skipped breakfast, I can’t really comment on the quality of the food. Just before we landed, they came around with chilled sparkling and still water garnished with a slice of fresh citrus. Quite refreshing.

Arrival: As I was in transit for eight hours, I wasn’t hassled with having to retrieve my bags. The Fast Track card proved to be very useful and I was able to get through immigration quickly and without incident. It gave me ample time to grab a room at an airport hotel and relax for before my next flight.

Overall Impression: The American Airline Flight offered great service, good dining and wine options, decent amenities and passable comfort. The flight was quite chic in appearance and offered all that was needed for a comfortable flight. The only point of mention that didn’t draw favor from me was the seats which just not comfortable to lie down flat in. But in all other aspect, the American Airline Flight was Bombastic.
