Check-In: We had arrived in Chicago from a connecting flight and had our boarding passes ready so there was no need for us to check-in.

The Lounge: As is the case with American carriers, they do not normally provide airport lounge access for domestic flights even if you are flying first class.

First Impressions: The boarding process was a zoo so just getting on the plane was a chore. Once in, I was surprised to see how spacious the First Class cabin appeared. However, the lack of a flight attendant in the area concerned me—was this a sign of things to come? Apparently, it was…

The Cabin: Our plane was an Airbus A320 with a seating configuration of 2x2 with three rows, having a total of 12 First Class seats. The seats were about 20 inches in width and about 35 inches in pitch and were relatively comfortable for a domestic 3-hour flight. The interior was clean and well-maintained although nothing particularly interesting about it enough to take note of.

The Flight (Service/Food/Drink): Finally, after 45 minutes after take-off, the lone flight attendant made her rounds taking everyone’s drink orders. Little did we know she was going to start serving dinner even before serving the drinks of anyone. She moved extremely slow and waited on one person at a time—she would get a person’s drink and food order, then go prepare the meal, and then deliver it, and then move on to the next person. At this speed, it took over an hour before she made it to the second row where I was seated.

Dinner options consisted of either a creamy grilled chicken penne pasta in a pink sauce or a Thai roast beef sandwich. I went with the pasta, which came with a side salad, and was surprised with the presentation—nice china, real silverware, and linen napkin. Aside from the plastic glasses, it was quite pleasant. The food, however, was not so impressive. The wine selection was Berringer Stone Cellar Chardonnay and Cabernet—not high-end wines, but again, not too bad, especially for a domestic flight.

After dinner, our not so speedy flight attendant brought out warm, out-of-the oven white chocolate macadamia nut cookies, served on their nice china… a nice end to a mediocre dinner.

After dinner, I checked out the entertainment system only to find out there wasn’t one! So I sat back for the rest of the 3 ½ hour flight and planned my strategy for Las Vegas.

Arrival: Our arrival at the Las Vegas airport was a bit ahead of schedule but it didn’t matter as the fifty-five minute wait for our luggage took all the enjoyment of arriving ahead of time anyhow.

Overall Impression US Airways flight 605 from Chicago ORD to Las Vegas was disappointing and did not leave us with a good impression of US Air. Part of the reason you fly First Class is for the added space, as well as for the additional service and comfort. The chaotic boarding, the extremely slow and non-responsive service on the plane, and the lack of an entertainment system made this flight a huge displeasure. My rating for this flight is somewhere between bombastic and not.
