Mezzo Mondo Negroamaro Rosso Salento (2007):

Varietal: Negroamaro
Region: Salento (Puglia)
Country: Italy
Vintage: 2007
Alcohol: 13.5%
Price: $12.00 USD; £5 GBP

Score: 88

For lovers of dry Italian reds like sangiovese, Mezzo Mondo's Negroamaro takes earthy red wine to a whole new level.

Rich in cassis and earth on the nose with just a hint of herb, the dense cherry colour is stunning in the glass. Medium bodied, there's no shying away from the bitter hits that give this wine it's name (amaro is Italian for 'bitter'). That said, the fruit revealed is deep raspberry, prunes and sour cherry that stand tall on the finish, rounding gently.

This wine begs for strong herbs (think rosemary and citrus roast lamb, basil and balsamic) and is clearly made to be enjoyed with food. For the price, it's a bargain and a great introduction to this locally celebrated, savoury south Italian varietal.
