*****UPDATE**** AME Sushi has closed it's doors. After our visit and our Not Bombastic rating, we cannot say we are surprised.

AME Sushi – Toronto, ON: Located off the beaten path on Mercer Street, AME’s authentic solid oak entrance doors give no indication of the innovative designs inside. The interior decor is an eclectic yet a cohesive fusion of styles. The juxtaposition of the elements creates a strong visual impact in what was generally a very simple space. Just a little trivia, AME means rain in Japanese and the building is actually a historic landmark as it was once home to the first women’s prison in Toronto. Right then, I was very anxious to find out if the food would live up to the intrigue of the whole place.

The menu was split into different sections with each having about a half-dozen items: Sushi, Sashimi and Raw, Tartare, Salads, Tempura and Agemono, Robata Grill and Hot Kitchen. We were in the mood for some delicious and fresh sashimi, but we were very disappointed to learn that many of the dishes were fused with some sort of fruit that definitely did not do any good to the overall taste. Had we known this in advance, we would have skipped going to this restaurant altogether.

We started with Edamame with Lime Yuzu and Aguni salt. Maybe it was just us, but we prefer a simple edamame and the lime flavoring did absolutely nothing to help the dish.

Next up we tried their sashimi and raw dishes like the Wagyu with Ponzu (a citrus-based sauce commonly used in Japanese culture), Tuna with Yuzu (a sour Japanese citrus fruit), Tuna Salmon with Spring Melon and the Red Snapper with Wasabi. Not one of these dishes impressed us and the fish did not taste and feel fresh at all.

With the sashimi being a dismal failure, we were hoping to have a better luck with the Tempura Dungeness Crab and Unagi, but once again, both dishes were merely passable and they were definitely nowhere near the best sushi in Toronto. We left many dishes unfinished including the Ebi Prawn Tempura. What’s more, we sipped on Southern Beauty Sake all throughout that disappointing meal and for the price of $150 CAN, it was not worth it. The only saving grace was probably the dessert, Chocolate and Coffee – a mixture of chocolate cake, a flavor of coffee and ice cream.

The service was also not up to par for a dinner of that expense. With a bill of more than $130, excluding the sake, the waiter should have been more attentive and had some personality!

Seeing as there were only a few guests dining there that night, it was apparent we were not the only ones who felt that AME deserves a sad Not Bombastic rating. There are definitely far better places when it comes to sushi in Toronto like Blowfish, Wabora and Ki
